The Technical Director will direct design for real-world fabrication through clear and concise drawing and documentation for fabricators, craftspeople, production personnel, and vendors on a highly collaborative team. Our clientele come in many forms, but can expect to direct projects in all of the following:

  • Experiential live events
  • Marketing activations and product launches, including luxury brands
  • Corporate
  • Tradeshow
  • Theatre
  • Museum exhibits

 

Job Responsibilities:

• Bring your own creative mark to the Technical Department.

• Build and develop the Technical Team, participate in creative team brainstorming, fabrication kick-off, and load in meetings.

• Direct technical design deliverables for fabrication and installation.

• Exhibit well-developed leadership qualities and an ability to understand and collaborate successfully across large and diverse project teams, client types, and stakeholders.

• Lead and mentor teams in the process of demonstrating technical thinking skills that are clear, accurate, and safe to clients, vendors, fabricators, and stakeholders.

• Lead Technical Team – delegate workloads, manage schedules and deadlines, assist in review and evaluation of performance.

• Oversee and manage the quality and accuracy of technical design documentation, safety protocols, and the execution of deliverables.

• Adherence to, and development of, best practices for the design, rigging, and fabrication of scenic elements.

• Assist Client Services Managers in building strong client relationships and act as a senior-level client representative for the Technical Team.

• Be a vocal participant in the development of the technical design, and collaborate with the Creative, Graphic, Fabrication, and Project Management teams to ensure final products successfully represent the creative proposal and scope of work.

• Conduct site surveys through photo documentation, dimensions, and onsite 3D modeling.

• Identify new and alternative ways of approaching technical production and fabrication with our Shop Team.

• Actively discuss technical errors and ensure that they will be rectified/escalated accordingly.

• Advise and provide feedback regarding budgets, respective expenditures, and project scope of work.

• Specify materials and vendors – gathering samples, negotiating prices, purchase requests, and tracking.

• Hands-on work in scenic shop, carpentry, welding, painting, or other scenic construction as needed and qualified.

• Act as crew chief and/or technical lead onsite as needed.

 

What We’re Looking For:

• 8+ years of professional experience within the technical theatre, event production, live events, or scenic fabrication industry.

• Bachelor’s degree in Design, Technical Production, Theatre Technology, or related.

• Experience in live theatre, events, touring, fabrication, or theatrical set construction.

• Excellent understanding of common building practices, construction materials and fastening techniques.

• Understanding of general carpentry and power tool operations.

• Ability to model, draft and render effectively with CAD programs – VectorWorks knowledge is preferred; use of this software is required near-term following hiring.

• General knowledge of A/V and lighting equipment is a plus.

• Skilled in computer use and Microsoft Office.

• Solid verbal communicator with good writing skills, keen ability to interact with clients and crew on all levels.

• Proactively ensure that team management is aware of problems or issues which negatively affect productivity. Give feedback openly and often that enables your team to work smarter.

• Ability to work collaboratively and independently on a team.

• Works calmly under pressure.

• Conducts business with high level of integrity.

• Valid driver’s license.

• Ability and willingness to travel.

• Bilingual (Spanish) is a plus.
